As a lifelong and devoted bibliophile, with countless hours scrounging through various antiquarian bookstores and cluttered libraries, there are few experiences which still thrill me so completely as finding a really well illustrated book. Although some photographic volumes can easily evoke a genuine astonishment for nature’s beauty, opening a book containing unfamiliar diagrams or drawings just excites that potential for discovering some vast new intellectual realm.
With perhaps the only exception being those whimsical depictions seen frequently in children’s books, no subject produces more extravagant and bewildering illustrations than in the long tradition of books on alchemy. Combining multiple interpretations within layer upon layer of obscure allegory, such alchemical engravings encapsulate profound understanding, and deep hidden meaning.
It’s recently become a kind of philosophical meditation of mine, scanning these old images into my computer, magnifying in upon degraded details, cleaning up delicate engraved lines eroded over time. Once restored, I try visualizing through the engraver’s how they might have originally chosen to color the plates. Although if other contemporaneously hand tinted examples exist, these are often useful as reference, perhaps needing only a slight tweaking for an updated digital medium.
Ultimately, I see my task as focusing upon small details, to highlight subtle nuances easily missed, or otherwise just impart a bit of fresh color into these obscure emblems of classical alchemy. As this symbolism remains as relevant for us today as when first printed hundreds of years ago, it is my privilege to share with you these beautiful images, printed upon t-shirts, as well as a wide variety of available quality merchandise. (Special Orders Accepted!) So please do take a moment to check out my other colorful alchemical offerings now available on Etsy.
